Isaac was about 13 years of
age at the time of our visit in July 2008.He is the oldest of 4 children.No one knows the whereabouts of his father.He left the family when Mom was pregnant with
the youngest 2 years ago and hasn’t been heard from since.Mom is raising Isaac, 9-year old Adiara,
4-year old Rasmani, and 1.5-year old Fatimata.They are living with grandparents (Dad’s parents), but they are elderly
and barely able to walk.In this
culture, if the husband dies, his family has rights to the children and mom
must have their permission to move them elsewhere.
Mom cultivates a field of
millet with the children.She also makes
and sells something they call akiki to generate a small income.They live within the town of Yako but have no
electricity.Their home is in need of
repair.They do have 1 goat and get
their water from a nearby well.
Isaac just finished 4th
grade but doesn’t know yet if he passed.His sister, Adiara finished 1st grade.All were in good health at the time of our
visit.
