Zida Lamine

Lamine was about 5 years old at the time of our visit in March 2009 (no one seemed certain of his age).  His father died 2 years ago of a stomach illness, leaving his wife, Lamine, and his older brothers Mohammed and Adama.  In this culture, the father’s family has the right to decide who raises the children if their son passes away.  In this case, the father's family chose to raise Adama, leaving the other 2 boys with their mother.  However, also in this culture, if a woman wishes to remarry, she must give up her children from a previous marriage.  Lamine's mother has remarried, so he and Mohammed were being raised by his mother’s parents.  But, in 2009, grandfather died.  Fortunately, an uncle has moved in with them for right now; and Mom does visit from time to time.

Lamine and the remaining family live within the town of Yako in a small courtyard with another woman and her 2 children. They have no electricity and they get their water from a well beside the courtyard. They have no animals. Their house is in average condition.

The 2 women cultivate a crop of millet together. There is no other source of income.  They were in good health when we visited.  Mohammed had completed 2nd grade, but had left school due to lack of means; so we will be sure to get him back in school.  In addition, with a sponsor, we can also get Lamine started.
