Luc is 10 years old. His father was a blind man and died some time ago – we’re not sure of the year or the cause. Luc is an only child, so he lives alone with his mother; but their home is in a large courtyard with extended family, so they’re not truly alone. They live in the village of Wedkingo.
Luc has never been to school. He is now too old to be accepted into the local public schools, but possibly we’ll be able to get him started in one of our beginning classes.
Luc and his mother’s home is a small round hut with thatched roof. The home is not in good condition although the thatched roof does manage to keep the rain out and is much cooler than the typical metal roof. They have no animals and of course no electricity. The two of them farm a field of millet together – Luc is still too young to be of much help, but he is learning. There is no other work.
Construction of the next 2 classrooms has begun! The deadline for completion is the 30th of September 2010 so we'll be ready for the start of school the first week of October.
