Banissi, Alice

Alice was about 4 years old at the time of our visit in July 2008.  Her father had just died a couple months ago, leaving his wife and their 3 children.  He had been a gardener in the capital city.  Alice is the youngest.  She has a 9- and a 12-year old sister.  Unfortunately, none of the children are in school and most likely it is too late for them to be admitted.  However, with a sponsor, Alice will be able to go to school in a couple years.

Alice and her family live in a small village called Rallo which is about 15 miles on a terrible dirt road outside of our town of Yako.  During rainy season, it is difficult to get in and out.  Their home is in a very simple courtyard and it is not in good repair.

The family has 2 goats which is considered a bank account.  In case of medical emergencies, the goats would be sold for cash.  Mom farms with her daughters alone now – this will be a difficult adjustment for her since she is accustomed to having the help of her husband.  Yet, she must farm or there will be no food.

All were in good health at the time of our visit.
