Alice was about 4 years old
at the time of our visit in July 2008.Her father had just died a couple months ago, leaving his wife and their
3 children.He had been a gardener in
the capital city.Alice is the
youngest.She has a 9- and a 12-year old
sister.Unfortunately, none of the
children are in school and most likely it is too late for them to be
admitted.However, with a sponsor, Alice
will be able to go to school in a couple years.
Alice and her family live in
a small village called Rallo which is about 15 miles on a terrible dirt road
outside of our town of Yako.During
rainy season, it is difficult to get in and out.Their home is in a very simple courtyard and
it is not in good repair.
The family has 2 goats which
is considered a bank account. In case of
medical emergencies, the goats would be sold for cash.Mom farms with her daughters alone now – this
will be a difficult adjustment for her since she is accustomed to having the
help of her husband.Yet, she must farm
or there will be no food.
