Sankara, Baba

Baba was about 6 at the time of our visit in July 2008.  His father died about a year ago in some sort of accident, leaving his wife and 6 children.  As of right now, all 6 children are still with her which is actually unusual. 

Baba and his family live within our town of Yako.  They are in a courtyard with Mom’s older brother and his wife and children.  It is a very small courtyard for many people.  It was messy; but the home is in good condition. 

The youngest of the children is a 2-year old and the oldest, an 18-year old.  Having older children around is helpful, especially for the work in the fields; but Mom could use some extra help with so many mouths to feed.  A couple of the older children also help by selling spices in town.

None of the children are in school, which is another concern.  With a sponsor, we will strongly encourage the family to enroll Baba in school as they can begin between 6 and 7 years of age.
