Baba was about 6 at the time
of our visit in July 2008.His father
died about a year ago in some sort of accident, leaving his wife and 6
children. As of right now, all 6
children are still with her which is actually unusual.
Baba and his family live
within our town of Yako. They are in a
courtyard with Mom’s older brother and his wife and children. It is a very small courtyard for many
people. It was messy; but the home is in
good condition.
The youngest of the children
is a 2-year old and the oldest, an 18-year old.Having older children around is helpful, especially for the work in the
fields; but Mom could use some extra help with so many mouths to feed.A couple of the older children also help by
selling spices in town.
None of the children are in
school, which is another concern. With a
sponsor, we will strongly encourage the family to enroll Baba in school as they
can begin between 6 and 7 years of age.
Construction of the next 2 classrooms has begun! The deadline for completion is the 30th of September 2010 so we'll be ready for the start of school the first week of October.
