I've just returned from a round table conference on Christian Education in Niamey, Niger. It was incredible. There were 140 of us participating from 11 French-speaking West African countries. The days were jam-packed beginning at 6:30 a.m. and continuing until 10:00 p.m. I didn't think I'd be able to keep going, but it was all so interesting that I never noticed the time. We talked about the Islamic schools. We heard from the son of an Imam (Muslim Pastor) who is now a Christian and working with schools. We heard from a gentleman who was to succeed his father as witch doctor, but is now part of an organization training teachers in Christian schools. We talked about how to develop more Christian schools and make sure they are not "Christian" in name only. The majority of the participants were African and I was encouraged to see their passion. We had a free afternoon with some fun activities planned and I chose to take a ride down the Niger River in a pirogue (a very long canoe). The owner had put cushions in the pirogue with room for about 20 of us. It was beautiful and peaceful and I found myself in awe of where I was - floating down a river in Niger in West Africa with new friends from Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast...how lucky I am! I'm heading back to Yako this afternoon and will start preparing for the next food distribution from the Hands of Hope-Joyce Meyer Ministries contribution; the literacy classes to begin soon and another project I'll tell you more about later. Have a blessed week! P.S. If you haven't read the August Newsletter, be sure to keep reading!
