Compaore, Joel

Compaore, Thierry

Thierry was 6 years old when we visited in March 2009. He was born and living in the country of Ivory Coast, but his mother died about 6 months ago in an accident involving a tree falling; and his father died 2 years ago of an unknown illness. Since then,  : : This Child's Story...


Diarra Twins

These are the Diarra twins, Mouniratou and Rachiratou. They were 6 at the time of this photo. Their father died in the war in Ivory Coast before they were even born. Their mother brought them to Burkina to live with her mother. A few years later, she  : : This Child's Story...


Djiguemde, Joseph

Joseph was about 5 years of age at the time of our visit in January 2009. His mother died about 4 years ago – apparently she suffered from mental illness and died of an overdose. His father is still living, but left Joseph to be cared for by an Aunt and  : : This Child's Story...


Ilboudo, Jean

Jean was 9 years old when we visited in January 2009. His mother died 9 years ago and his father left for the country of Ivory Coast. Jean’s grandmother, a widower, takes care of him and his younger sister, Isabel.  : : This Child's Story...


Kanazoe, Harouna

Harouna was 5 years old when we visited his family in March 2009. He lives with his mom, an older sister, Aminata (about 12) and a little sister, Nassirata (about 1). Mom’s first husband died several years ago, leaving his wife and 3 other childre  : : This Child's Story...


Kanazoe, Isaac

Isaac was about 13 years of age at the time of our visit in July 2008. He is the oldest of 4 children. No one knows the whereabouts of his father. He left the family when Mom was pregnant with the youngest 2 years ago and hasn’t been heard from since.  : : This Child's Story...


Kayende, Daoda

Daoda was about 9 years old at the time of our visit in Dec 2008. He is in his 3rd year of school. His father died just this year in February from AIDS. There are 4 children but 1 is married and living elsewhere. Daoda and the others are still with th  : : This Child's Story...

Germaine is about 12 years old and in the 5th grade. Her father died from an unknown illness in 2005, leaving his wife and 3 kids. The oldest child is Emil, 16 years old and in high school. The youngest is Claire, 4 years old.  : : This Child's Story...

Ouedraogo, Anya

Anya was 7 years old when we visited her in March 2009. She lives in the village of Nabengya with her father, mother and 5 siblings. The oldest is around 17 and the youngest are 3-year-old twins. Mom really had no idea how old most of her own children we  : : This Child's Story...


Ouedraogo, Constant

Constant was about 10 years of age at the time of our visit in March of 2009 – no one seemed sure of his age, but he was in his 3rd or 4th year of school. Constant is a different case from our others because he still has both parents; however his father  : : This Child's Story...

Emil was about 8 at the time of our visit in March 2009. He is not an orphan – both of his parents are still living, but under the circumstances, we found this to be a vulnerable case. Emil’s father is not able to use his hands and therefore cannot help  : : This Child's Story...

Erve was about 7 years old at the time of our visit in March 2009 (Mom wasn’t sure if he was 6 or 7). Erve has 1 younger sibling and 2 older siblings, the oldest of which is about 16. They live with their Mom in the village of Nabengya. Erve’s father is  : : This Child's Story...


Ouedraogo, Germaine

Germaine is 9 years old. She is one of 8 children. Her father died recently from an unknown illness. Her oldest brother, about 17, has left “in search of gold”. The others are still living with their mother, the oldest a teenage girl and the youngest  : : This Child's Story...


Ouedraogo, Gregoire

Gregoire was 7 years old at the time of our visit in March 2009. He is the youngest of 6 children. His father died of an unknown illness 3 years ago, leaving Mom to take care of the children. Gregoire and one of his older brothers, Mady, still live with M  : : This Child's Story...

Harouna was about 2 years old at the time of our visit in February. His father drowned earlier this year – apparently he and his brother were fighting when he fell into water and did not know how to swim.  : : This Child's Story...

Kombassé is an only child. She may be 5 or 6 years old – Grandma isn’t sure. Her mother abandoned her husband and Kombassé several years ago. Soon after, father left “in search of gold”. They hear from him occasionally, but he doesn’t send much for su  : : This Child's Story...

Lassine is about 7 years old as of August 2008. His father died early this year from an unknown illness. His mother died soon after – they say she went to the capital city for treatment because of a swelled foot and died. Lassine is now being raised by  : : This Child's Story...

Luc is 10 years old. His father was a blind man and died some time ago – we’re not sure of the year or the cause. Luc is an only child, so he lives alone with his mother; but their home is in a large courtyard with extended family, so they’re not truly al  : : This Child's Story...

Zachia is 6 years old as of our visit in February 2008. His father died in 2002. Zachia has five siblings. Two are living with an uncle and Zachia and the other three are with their mother.   : : This Child's Story...

Baba was about 6 at the time of our visit in July 2008. His father died about a year ago in some sort of accident, leaving his wife and 6 children. As of right now, all 6 children are still with her which is actually unusual.  : : This Child's Story...

Bintou was about 12 years old at the time of our visit in January (her mom was not at all sure about her age). Bintou’s father died 3 years ago of diabetes leaving Mom to take care of 3 children (2 other children are married and 1 died). Bintou is the onl  : : This Child's Story...
